Version Confusion

August 8, 2018

So you want a Bible but you had no idea there were so many different versions! What do you do? Never fear, there is no need to let all those abbreviations and versions get your head in a spin, the G4G Bible Decipherer is here. Check out this summary of some of the different versions and the good stuff they’ve got in them.

King James Version (KJV)

History:

47 men back in 1604 were commissioned by King James I of England to translate the 3rd English version of the Bible. Now these guys were the bee’s knees of scholars of the day; in other words they were smart. This version was finished in 1611 and it was translated directly from original manuscripts to make sure it was true to the original writings.

Why Choose It:

  • Is a literal translation so it says pretty exactly what the original language said

  • Great for doing a detailed study of the Bible

  • It’s been around for ages (401 years to be precise!)

New King James Version (NKJV)

History:

375 years after the KJV was introduced, a huge group of 130 scholars was commissioned give it a revamp while keeping the integrity of the manuscript. Most of the old school language like “ye”, “thee”, “thou” and “shalt” were replaced with modern grammar to make the Bible was easier to read. The whole process took 7 years and was finished in 1982.

Why Choose It:

  • Still true to original manuscripts

  • Easier, more modern language- compared to KJV

  • With 130 guys on the job, it’s hard to put a foot wrong!

New Living Translation (NLT)

History:

It took 90 people 7 years to complete this version! It was an attempt to translate from the original manuscripts and use modern English so that the audience wouldn’t be confused by language that was used in previous literal translations.

Why Choose It:

  • Modern Language

  • Sticks to the important truth of the Bible

  • Really good reading Bible

New International Version (NIV)

History:

Dubbed as one of the most popular version in history this one was translated by a committee of about 100 people and took 10 years. It was translated from some of the original texts and uses a balance of thought-for-thought and word-for-word translation techniques. This helps in conveying not only the meaning of the words but the general theme of the passages.

Why Choose It:

  • Modern language

  • One of the most popular versions

  • Not a paraphrase but translated from original texts
