Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

School is out for the year (and what a year it has been!) But now it’s time to celebrate the holidays and what better way to celebrate then by letting your hair down, physically and metaphorically.

One of the things my sister always loved about holidays was crazy hair. She loved having her hair coloured, and the crazier the colour the better. Unfortunately even semi-permanent hair colour takes a long time to wash out and can be damaging to your hair. So thank goodness for coloured hair spray and hair chalk! I remember saving up our pocket money to buy hair chalk in purple and blue to give her the coolest hairstyle ever. Though it didn’t turn out exactly how we planned, we had lots of fun doing it and, with one wash and little mess, the colour was gone, ready to try something new the next day.

Do you have a sibling or friend that you could rope into doing some hair fun? You could even go as far as matching your hair, outfit and nail colour. We sometimes even got our poor younger brother involved.

My sister and I had a lot of fun with our many hair experiments over the years. They ranged from learning new types of braids to some interesting colour mishaps (there was a green hair incident, but we won’t talk about that).

If colour is not your thing (it’s not for everyone), there are still plenty of great options to choose from to celebrate the start of your well earnt holidays. For instance, if you have straight hair, why not curl it?

My favourite way of getting fantastic curls at home with no heat is the dishrag method:

  1. Separate your hair into sections small enough to wrap around a dishrag. For long hair you will need more sections.

  2. Cut up a few dishrags (with parental permission) so that you have as many rags as you have sections of hair. You can generally get 4-6 mini rags depending on the size of the ones you use.

  3. Wet the dishrags and your hair

  4. Wrap your hair around the dishrags and leave to dry

  5. Unwrap each section and run your fingers through your hair to break up the curls.

  6. Enjoy heat free curls with things that you already had at home and without damaging your hair.

Most important is that you have fun, get some rest and are prepared for all the amazing things God has waiting for you in the new year.

“The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.”” Exodus 33:14
